Was Sie über Aluminium-Leiterplatten wissen müssen

Technological advancement is taking place every day and things are evolving for the betterment. Earlier, you have to depend on the end-to-end wiring systems and connectivity to connect different electronic devices electrically. But, with the development of advanced technologies, aluminum PCB has appeared in the market and diligently removed the use of end-to-end wiring system. The inception of PCB has given the electronic industry a completely new look. There are aluminum PCB factories that produce the lightweight PCBs that take lesser place and can effectively connect different electronic components. This system is more advanced and convenient than the old and conventional methods of connectivity. Aluminum PCB uses electrically insulating materials between the copper layer and the aluminum metal. Therefore, it has become the first choice that involves the application of maintaining the temperature in any project along with controlling it and also for heat dissipation. Today, you will get to know more about the aluminum PCB that is manufactured in the aluminum PCB factory.

Aluminum PCB- a brief description

PCB stands for Printed Circuit Board which can connect different electronic components just by using a single board. The parts of aluminum PCB are mainly the laminated copper layer which is electrically insulated and can conduct dielectric properly. In aluminum PCB, the copper foil follows the actual circuit pattern and the metal base dissipates heat. It is done with the help of dielectric, placed between the metal layers. Usually, there are three layers in the aluminum PCB

  • Circuit layer: This is the copper layer and it can be 1 to 10 oz thick.
  • Base layer: This is made of either copper or aluminum metal substrate. Though it is available in different thicknesses, usually, it is of 1mm thick.
  • Insulating layer:  This is the dielectric layer that is made of electrically insulated and thermally conductive material.

Different types of aluminum PCBs

In the construction and design industry, aluminum PCBs are used variedly in different applications. The basic purpose of the aluminum PCB is always the same as it is used for dissipating heat of the applications that are involved in high temperatures. Here are the main types of aluminum PCBs that are used in different industries-

Flexible aluminum PCBs

Flexible aluminum PCBs are a new addition in the industry of aluminum products. Such materials are made of polyimide resin and ceramic filters that bring more flexibility to the board and make it electrically insulated along with enhancing thermal efficiency. Applying such products on the aluminum material is perfect for reducing the cost of expensive connectors and cables. As such PCBs are flexible enough, one can twist, fold, and shape it into any form while needed. But, once it takes the new form, it can’t be brought back to the original shape.

Hybrid aluminum PCBs

In this type of PCBs, the non-thermal materials are processed separately and refined well before setting on the aluminum base. Here, usually, 2 layer or 4 layer structures are developed that comes with FR4 materials. In this system, non-thermal materials get attached to thermal materials along with aluminum base and help perfectly in dissipating heat. The use of non-thermal materials along with thermal materials is quite a cost-effective solution than the usual FR4 products and to develop this product, no heat sinks are required. As the seal is created by solder fillet, it doesn’t require any expensive adapters.

Multilayer aluminum PCBs

These are very common in power supply products and there are numerous layers of thermally conductive dielectrics. When this material is combined with several layers of circuitry, it becomes too much useful. There is a drawback of this system as it comes with single-layer construction. It is not very effective, but if the design gets more complex, it can be a great choice in the thermal industry for heat dissipation.

Through-hole aluminum PCBs

When the industries require a complex design of aluminum PCB with great efficiency, this is the PCB that meets the requirement. Here, thermal bonding materials are used on both sides of the aluminum base to laminate the PCB. Once the lamination is completed, the board is drilled. To make the board more insulated, the drills are mainly made on the aluminum clearances.

So, these are certain types of aluminum PCB that are mainly used in the construction industries for dissipating heat. The usage of this advanced PCB has reduced the cost of traditional electrical connectivity and has made the heat dissipation much more advanced.

What are the benefits of using aluminum PCB?

From the discussion above, it is evident that aluminum PCB can connect several electronic devices more effectively and also dissipate heat in the industries quite well in cost-effective ways. But, there are more benefits to this. Have a look-

Instead of FR4-based PCB, if the industries use aluminum PCB, that can be the best choice when it comes to using applications that produce high temperature and pressure.

  • As aluminum is a non-toxic material, it is the best choice of the industries to use in manufacturing PCBs and keeping the environment free from toxic intrusion.
  • The Cost-effectiveness of the aluminum PCB is another important benefit of it. As aluminum is quite economical, using it in a different application can lower the manufacturing cost. Besides, the availability of aluminum is also great from the mines and the refining cost is low. So, overall, it takes much lower to manufacture aluminum PCBs than any other traditional PCBs.
  • The kind of strength, flexibility, and durability you get from the aluminum-based products are quite higher than several other products like ceramic or fiberglass materials.

So, here you get a brief review of aluminum PCBs. Aluminum is a sturdy material and can conduct thermal dielectric more than any epoxy glass. Due to its flexibility and varied usability, aluminum PCB is used in RF and automotive industries. Using this in so many industries can reduce the manufacturing cost and also helps in keeping the environment greener without producing many toxic elements in nature.
